Building Trust Underground: A Decade of Partnership at Winsford Mine

When you’re operating the UK’s largest rock salt mine, you need equipment that’s as tough as the environment.

We are proud to announce that Compass Minerals has once again turned to our team to supply a new 10-tonne skip for their Winsford site in Cheshire. This repeat order is testament to a decade-long collaboration that has seen us deliver everything from passenger lifts to major shaft upgrades.

Project Status in February 2026:
  • Drawings are issued.
  • Material preparation is underway.
  • Fabrication begins this month in our 10,000sqm Barnsley workshop.

Qualter Hall has acted as a specialist contractor for Compass Minerals (the owner of the former Salt Union/Winsford Mine) for over a decade, focusing on essential mechanical and infrastructure overhauls for the mine’s mechanical and winding systems.

Works have included:

  • Refurbishment of the No. 5 Shaft Skip, involving a comprehensive renewal of the skip body, tipping mechanism, safety gear and decks.
  • Major upgrades to No. 4 Shaft included the design, supply, manufacture, installation and commissioning of a new winding system and eight-rope hoist, motors, drive systems, electrical and safety systems and a new cage/lift.

These projects demonstrate Qualter Hall’s critical role in delivering complex, high-specification equipment and system renewals for Compass Minerals’ deepest mine operations.
