Project: Refurbishment of Connaught Road Swing Bridge at London's Royal Docks

Qualter Hall has an experienced team of Electrical and Control Systems engineers based at our Barnsley HQ. As such, we were awarded the major M&E contract with London's Royal Docks for the design, manufacture, delivery, site installation and commissioning of a complex replacement and refurbishment project of the electrical control system for the Connaught Road Swing Bridge which links London City Airport and ExCel London.

The Electrical Systems scope of work included:

  • Road Bridge Control System including new Control Panels / MCC in the Underground Machinery Room, Bridge Main Pier and Control Tower
  • Electrical Installation for new Control System
  • Re-integration of Wig Wags/Barriers/Matrix Signs
  • Electrical installation for domestics services in Underground Machinery Room (Sockets/Lighting)
  • New Fire system, Security system and Gas Monitoring System
  • New CCTV system
  • New Public Address system
  • New Auto Changeover System to manage the transfer of power between the Mains Electrical Supply and the existing Standby Generator supply
  • New Bridge Navigation Lights (LED)
  • New Bridge External LED Floodlights

Additional Works included:

In the Underground Machinery Room

  • Refurbishment of the Underground Machinery Room
  • Refurbishment of the Hydraulic systems and HPU and replacement of equipment required for the Hydraulic equipment to re-enter service
  • Supply and install new Sump Pump
  • Replace Underground Machinery Room Ventilation System ductwork and fans

Equipment associated with the Bridge Main Pier

  • Replace Bridge Main Pier bearing Auto Lubrication system
  • Replace all Hydraulic Flexible Hoses
  • Check and Pressure Test the Hydraulic Pipework
  • Clean and Internally re-pain the Bridge Main Pier
  • Check and Clean Drainage system

Refurbishment of Underground Services including:

  • Exposing the existing pipework between Underground Machinery Room and Bridge Main Pier
  • Check and Pressure Test the Hydraulic pipework after any remedial works
  • Make good civil works after completion of above
