Upper Bank Street Bridge
The construction of the Canary Wharf Crossrail Metro Station (‘Elizabeth Line Station’) considerably narrowed the adjacent North Dock channel. The Upper Bank Street Lifting Bridge replaced an existing, longer bridge over the North Dock, and formed part of the prestigious Crossrail Project.
What work was done by Qualter Hall on the Upper Bank Street Lifting Bridge?
Qualter Hall was contracted by Hollandia for Canary Wharf Contractors (Crossrail) Ltd (CWC). Our scope of works included for the design, procurement, manufacture, assembly, delivery, installation and commissioning of electrical and hydraulic equipment including the following:-
- Design and supply of hydraulic power pack complete with all pumps, valves, offline filtration, warning devices, filling points, all associated connection points and fixings.
- Telescopic single main bridge lifting cylinder.
- All electrical control equipment required to operate and control the bridge, including: connection into main supply; distribution board, cable reelers, pump/motor control panels and PLC; bridge mounted transducers, navigation light and control system; control desk, road barriers and wig wags.
- Electrical Installation.
Commissioning was carried out in a densely populated and built-up environment which was part of one of Europe’s largest construction sites at the time.
The Upper Bank Street (UBS) Lifting Bridge weighs 275 tons and spans 26 meters, carrying traffic over the North Dock. It is situated at the north end of Canary Wharf, linking Upper Bank Street with the Crossrail (‘Elizabeth Line’) Station. The north side of the bridge deck is lifted using a hydraulically powered lifting cylinder which was reused from the previous bridge. When the bridge is lifted, the North Dock is navigable for shipping traffic in compliance with the British Waterways requirement.
