Qualter Hall completes scheme of work at Buckinghamshire’s historic Marlow Bridge
Qualter Hall has supplied a set of twelve replacement bearings to support the deck of the almost 200-year-old Marlow Bridge across the River Thames in Buckinghamshire.
Although the contract included a small amount of work for our in-house design team, the majority was build-to-print and was placed directly into production for quick turnaround in our 10,000 sqm workshop. Our specialist team fabricated, assembled, painted and trial tested the bearings, before conducting a trial fit assembly prior to dispatch from our works.
Working on behalf of Buckinghamshire Council, our client for this project was civil engineering giant Balfour Beatty (Balvac division). Following a rigorous bidding process against two other suppliers, Qualter Hall was chosen based on our experience, capabilities, lead time and cost.
Two subtly different types of bespoke steel bearing were manufactured, each with an estimated lifespan of 50 years. The image below shows one of the bearings we replaced. The new bearings are part of an extensive restoration and improvement project which is in progress on the grade I listed structure.
Marlow Bridge opened in 1832 and was designed by William Tierney Clark, the designer of Marlow Bridge’s larger twin which crossed the Danube River in Budapest.
