Millennium Bridge, Hull

On an exclusive subcontract basis, Qualter Hall were appointed by main contractor, C Spencer Ltd to design, supply, install and commission this 34m span counterweighted pedestrian swing bridge over the navigable River Hull.

Located close to ‘Sammy’s Point’, The Millennium Bridge forms part of a waterfront promenade, providing pedestrian access from Humber Street in central Hull to The Deep aquarium. It forms the pedestrian entrance to this major visitor attraction on the east bank of the River Hull, as it joins the Humber Estuary. This is the first movable bridge to have been constructed in Hull.

The architectural form of the bridge features an elevated counterweight box with balance loads being transferred through pre-tensioned bars.

What work was done by Qualter Hall at the Hull Millennium Bridge?

  • Qualter Hall’s team supplied and installed the MEICA package for the Millennium Bridge. Fabrication and manufacture was completed at our Barnsley workshop.
  • Qualter Hall’s contract included the complete electrical drive and control system featuring 5 invertor controlled drive units. Each comprises a 5½ kW braked motor and epicyclic planetary gearbox with a torque limiter between. This set-up provides drive system protection in the event of ship impact with the bridge.
  • The Qualter Hall team formed part of the integrated team that installed the bridge. Our Site Services team oversaw the commissioning of the bridge and comprehensive site acceptance testing, before delivering operator and maintenance training to the client's on-site team.
