Scraper Rectification at Oldham Waste Water Treatment Works
Qualter Hall is working on the completion of rectification works on 6 scraper units at Oldham Waste Water Treatment Works. The project is for our client, Black & Veatch, supplied by their local partner, Binnies.
The scrapers in 6 primary settlement tanks (PSTs) were ineffective due to problems with their drive system. Our rectification works alter the method of drive to a chain driven system to operate the scrapers as intended. The final contract is for the design, fabrication, installation and commissioning of this new system to each of the 6 scrapers, with a project duration of 17 months.
What work was done by Qualter Hall at Oldham WWTW?
- Following detailed investigative work, our in-house technical design team proposed several alternative drive mechanisms. The adopted conceptual design was fully developed, supplemented by 3D modelling of components and assemblies, detailed manufacturing drawings, full calculations and assembly drawings.
- Components such as chains and wheels were sourced by our in-house purchasing team. Bespoke components were fabricated, welded, machined and surface treated in our Barnsley facility. These included access platforms, chain support brackets, pinion support brackets and chain anchor plates.
- Sub-assemblies were produced in our Barnsley workshop, to facilitate efficient on-site installation, before all components were delivered to Oldham and installed by our Site Services team.
- Two phases of works were overseen by a dedicated project manager, accountable for ensuring that contractual obligations are met to the satisfaction of the client. Initially, our team completed the design, manufacture/supply of parts, installation and testing of the first scraper system. The modified drive design was comprehensively tested, monitored over a 4-week testing period and validated before commencing work to rectify the remaining 5 scraper units.
- The validated works were undertaken for each of the remaining 5 scraper units, scheduled sequentially as agreed with the client, to minimise any disruption to the operation of the facility.
- As part of the commissioning process, operation and maintenance manuals were produced and supplied to the client, supplementary to training of the client’s on-site operatives which was delivered by our Site Services team.
