Bow Locks
Qualter Hall was contracted to manufacture, supply, install and commission 2 pairs of mitre gates complete with electro-hydraulic operating systems, 16 stop logs and stainless steel embedded parts, at Bow Locks on the River Lee Navigation (a.k.a. ‘River Lea’).
The clear navigation width through each pair of gates is 6.0 m, the outer gates being 6.3 m high and the inner gates being 4.9 m high. Whilst the gate structures were designed by the client’s engineer, Qualter Hall were responsible for the complete design of the electro-hydraulic control systems.
Bow Locks are a vital bi-directional lock system in Bromley-by-Bow, East London, connecting the tidal Bow Creek (River Thames) to the non-tidal River Lee (a.k.a. River Lea) Navigation and Limehouse Cut. The gates provide the ability to ‘lock in’ from high tidal conditions to a lower navigation level, thereby providing flood protection from exceptionally high tides on the River Lee.
