Automation of 13 Lock Gate Systems

This scheme, for British Waterways (The Canal & River Trust), involved 13 sites, all of which underwent a systematic transformation of varying degrees into a user/operator automated system.

What work was done by Qualter Hall on the Aire & Calder Canal Lock Gates?

  • Design, supply, installation and commissioning  of the hydraulic systems (powerpacks, cylinders and connections).
  • Supply, installation and commissioning of the electrical controls.
  • Supply and installation of new civil pits to accept gate cylinder mechanisms.
  • Design and supply of gate sluice systems within the existing hand wind casings (to retain the overall aesthetics of a traditional lock gate)
  • Civil building to house controls etc.
  • Supply and installation of water level detection systems
  • Supervision of subcontractors at various sites.
